About · John James Staniszewski

I didn't find mushrooms.
They found me at the bottom.

Chicago. Self-taught. No degree, no lab, no plan — a garage and one promise I decided to keep.

01  The Story

The long version.

I was an addict. I lost things that don’t come back — people, years, a version of myself I was supposed to become. I’m not going to dress that up, because the dressing-up is the thing that kept me sick.

What I had, at the end of it, was a garage in Chicago and too much time to think.

I started growing mushrooms because it was the one thing in my life I could control. Not because I loved fungi. Because a grow room doesn’t negotiate. It needs the same temperature, the same humidity, the same attention, every single day — and it does not care what happened to you, what you’re feeling, or what you meant to do. Miss three days and the whole room turns.

That was the first honest relationship I’d had in years.

The room taught me something no program had. Discipline isn’t intensity. It’s return. It’s the number of times you come back after you didn’t. I started keeping one small promise a day — small enough that I couldn’t lie to myself about whether I’d kept it — and I kept it on the days it meant nothing.

The garage became a room. The room became a farm. The farm became 50,000 square feet and, eventually, more than a million pounds of mushrooms. Along the way it became 3,000 pounds of mushroom marinara going into Chicago public schools, and growers from Florida to New York calling to ask how.

I know how that reads. It reads like a redemption story with a tidy ending. It isn’t one. I still have the same morning everybody else has. The difference is that I built something that holds when I don’t.

That’s what Micro Discipline is. I wrote it down so it wasn’t luck — so it could be handed to somebody who is where I was, in a garage or a car or a kitchen at 4am, trying to work out where to put their hands.

02  What I Believe

Four things I'd tell you if we only had a minute.

01

Small enough that you can't lie about it

If a promise is big enough to negotiate with, you’ll negotiate. Make it small enough that “did I?” has one answer.

02

Return beats streak

The number that matters isn’t how many days you didn’t miss. It’s how fast you came back after you did.

03

The room doesn't care how you feel

Build things that need you on schedule. They’ll carry you further than motivation will.

04

Say the true version

Most of what breaks people is the gap between the story they tell and the thing that’s actually happening.

04  Where I’ve Shown Up

Stages, mics and rooms.

Where the story has been told out loud — to growers, to clinicians, and to kids who’d never seen a mushroom grow.

05  Where To Start

Three ways in. Start where you are.

You’ve read the threads and watched the videos and you still don’t have a place to start. These go in order. The guide first. Then the system. Then the deeper work.

Step One

The Free Guide

Free

You know the moment discipline breaks. You don’t know what to do inside it. Plain language, written for people who have already quit once.

Step Two

Micro Discipline

$97

Reading about discipline and running it are two different things. Eleven modules, lifetime access, workbook, sound guide and strain guide. Built to survive the week you fall off.

Step Three

Work With Me

By application

You’ve done the reading. You’ve run the system. The same morning still meets you. Six weeks, one on one, on the inner work the system supports and never replaces.
